* Success Story : Skybird Microproject - Ethiopian Red Cross Society - Illu Aba Bor Branch.

Ethiopian Red Cross Association (ERCS) Illu Aba Bor branch is one of the 7 ERCS branches who implemented Skybird micro projects in Ethiopia in Skybird cycle 2 program implementation period from November 1st 2021 till October 31st 2022.

​

ERCS Illu Aba Bor Branch Skybird micro project is entitled “Improving WASH and Livelihood Conditions of Gadisa Oda and Sedo Kebeles in Mettu District of Illu Abab Bora Zone” and one of its components is:  Improving water access by construction of two hand dug wells and one spring.

​

A team from AutRC and ERCS conducted a learning documentation visit on July 07, 2023 to ERCS Illu Aba Bor Branch and the micro project site, and talked to the beneficiaries.

The armed conflict in Cabo Delgado continues to exact a toll on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

 

Humanitarian consequences linked to displacement, the destruction of infrastructure and loss of livelihoods continue.

 

While about 834,000 people are still internally displaced, a total of 1 million people are extremely vulnerable due the impact of the conflict.

 

Moreover, 420,000 people have returned to their places of origin across the province but find themselves similarly vulnerable to those still internally displaced.

 

They face critical needs for livelihoods, shelter, water, food, and other emergency support.

* IFRC - Ethiopia - Tigray complex emergency -  Operational Update ( MDRET029 )

What happened, where and when?

​

The conflict that broke out on 4th November 2020 between the Federal Democratic Government of Ethiopia (GoE) and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) left an estimated 1.8 million people displaced, claimed several hundred thousand lives according to some estimates, and left Tigray in ruins with many Tigrayans struggling to obtain basic needs and medical care.

 

A telecommunications, electricity, and banking blackout that lasted for roughly two years, effectively cut Tigrayans off from the rest of the world. Furthermore, the distribution of aid was blocked for many months; in December 2022, an estimated 5.5 million people in Northern Ethiopia were facing severe acute food insecurity....

* Bringing the Water System back to life in Tigray, Ethiopia.

After two years of civil war, rehabilitating the damaged water infrastructure of Tigray became a priority for MSF teams.

​

When MSF teams were able to return to Tigray in November 2022, the region was emerging from a devastating two-year civil war.

 

The war caused significant damage to infrastructure, whether due to lack of maintenance, intentional destruction, or the fighting. Health facilities were hardly functioning.

* The Journey of Food.

The Journey of Food is an interactive graphic coordinated by UNEP and World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of the UN Food Systems Task Force.

 

It gives a snapshot of some of the challenges and opportunities for a food system transformation along the entire food system’s value chain, along with inspiring case studies and entry points for all stakeholders, including women and youth.

* Global Water Crisis looming, UN Says.

A United Nations report has warned of a looming global water crisis and an "imminent risk" of shortages due to overconsumption and climate change. 

 

The world is "blindly travelling a dangerous path" of "vampiric overconsumption and overdevelopment", the report said. 

 

Its publication comes before the first major UN water summit since 1977.

Thousands of delegates will attend the three-day gathering in New York, US.
